The Packed Cell Volume (PCV), also known as Hematocrit (HCT), is a simple but vital blood test. It measures the percentage of your total blood volume that is made up of Red Blood Cells (RBCs).

Since red blood cells contain hemoglobin, the protein responsible for transporting oxygen, the PCV/HCT value is a critical indicator of your blood's capacity to deliver oxygen to your body's tissues.

This test is a fundamental part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and is used by doctors to screen for, diagnose, and monitor conditions like anemia (low value) and polycythemia (high value).

The PCV/HCT measures the proportion (percentage) of your whole blood that consists of red blood cells. If your result is 45%, it means 45 mL of red blood cells are present in every 100 mL of blood.

A result below the normal range is usually a sign of Anemia, which indicates you have too few red blood cells or a reduced blood cell volume. Causes include: Blood Loss: Acute (trauma) or chronic (ulcers, heavy menstruation). Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of iron, Vitamin B12, or folate is necessary for RBC production. Bone Marrow Disorders: Conditions that interfere with blood cell production. Hemodilution: An increase in the fluid portion (plasma), such as during pregnancy or after significant intravenous fluid administration.
