A homocysteine test is a blood test that measures the level of homocysteine, an amino acid, in a person’s blood. Homocysteine is produced by the body during the metabolism of proteins and is normally broken down and converted into other substances. However, high levels of homocysteine in the blood can be an indicator of certain medical conditions, such as vitamin B12 or folate deficiencies, as well as an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. The test is often used to help diagnose these conditions and to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for those with elevated levels of homocysteine. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as increasing intake of vitamin B12 and folate, or taking supplements, can help lower homocysteine levels and reduce the risk of associated health problems.
